Strangest Book of the Week #5
This has mostly been a textbook week, so not many new strange books. This is another book that’s been sitting around the office forever because no one (ok, mostly I) don’t want to get rid of it, but what to do with it? oh yeah! FEATURE IT ON THE WEBSITE!!
How to Master The Video Games
by Tom Hirschfeld, originated by Robert Grossman and Walter Zacharius, 1981. ISBN 0553201646.
Subtitle is “Simple strategies to improve your scores”. It has chapters on Space Invaders-type Games, Asteroids-Type Games, Maze Games and Miscellaneous. Subsections include notes on Pac-Man, Centipede, Defender, Space Odyssey, Asteroids and Asteroids Deluxe, Astro Blaster, Gorf, Galaxian, Battle Zone, Targ, Missile Command and many more.
The first line of the introduction is prescient: “Video games are not a fad.” It’s amazing how many detailed instructions, diagrams and tips there are for these earliest of home video and arcade games; all those deceptively simple golden age video games. Space Invaders had only just come out in 1978!
Simpler times. It’s a charming, nostalgia-inducing little book.
