Happy Bastille Day!

Hello you clever and beautiful readers. I wanted to wish everyone a Happy Bastille Day! Today in History, July 14th, 1789 French Revolutionaries stormed the massive fortress prison at the center of Paris; The Bastille. The Bastille had long stood as a symbol of royal repression to the peoples of Paris. The Mob smashed into the fortress and murdered the garrison, while freeing Voltaire and others imprisoned there. The assault shook the foundations of the Bourbon monarchy and started the tumultuous era of the French Revolution. King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette would be arrested shortly after the storming of the Bastille,  ending the  ancien regime and ushering in a period of revolutionary unrest and war across the continent that would rage until the final defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo ion June 18, 1815.

The attack on the Bastille was a watershed moment in Western Civilization. It marked the birth of modern republicanism in Europe and the implications spread their shadows across the continent, and indeed the world. The World fundamentally changed after the Bastille, and countless dictators and revolutionaries have drawn from it for both inspiration and imitation.

<Edit>  I wanted to give my deepest condolences to the families and victims of the horrible attack in Nice on Thursday night. The People of the USA stand with the people of France in this difficult time. The attack on France is an attack at the heart of Western Civilization, on one of its most celebrated days.
